B.O.O.S.T. Testimonial-Misty Barnes

Not all students are successful in main stream high school, so I am so grateful that there was a program like B.O.O.S.T. available for me. The small classroom and individual attention were important for me to succeed. My instructor worked with me on my problem subjects so I was able to keep up. The instructor, Carol Bourland, never gave up on me. She knew I could do it – and I did!

I also appreciate all of the life and job skills I learned in the B.O.O.S.T. program. I learned about nutritional cooking, defensive driving, CPR and so many other life skills. I also practiced interview skills and learned how to write a decent resume so that I could get a job.

I have finished my C.N.A. class through Western Wyoming Community College and am ready to apply for my license. i want to obtain my R.N. license and become a nurse.

I have no doubt that the B.O.O.S.T. program gave me the tools to succeed; without this program I would not be where I am now.

What is the Hathaway Scholarship?

I often have students ask what the Hathaway Scholarship is. The Hathaway Scholarship is available for Wyoming students to pursue postsecondary education within the state of Wyoming. The program consists of scholarships with different eligibility requirements.

Students and parents are encouraged to visit with their counselor or senior advisor to discuss the program. Students interested in accessing the Hathaway Scholarship should talk to their counselor early in High School so they can prepare. A Wyoming Community College or the University of Wyoming will make the final determination for eligibility.

You can be eligible for the Hathaway Scholarship if you left school and obtained your G.E.D. The requirements are slightly different for G.E.D. students and eligibility is based on your G.E.D. score and your A.C.T. score. The College and Career Readiness Center at the B.O.C.E.S. has more information for G.E.D. candidates.

B.O.O.S.T. Testimonial- Joshua Krebs

My name is Joshua Krebs. I was a part of the fall 2009 BOOST class. I was Valedictorian of the class of ten students. Joining BOOST was the best decision I have made so far in my life. I joined BOOST because, due to extenuating circumstances, I was 2 years behind on graduating from traditional high school. My mom had been battling a drug addiction for a year in 2006 when she was arrested. During that year I spent most of my school days staying at home caring for my two younger sisters. BOOST not only helped me to attain my G.E.D., but also gave me valuable life skills. BOOST taught me how to build a functional resume, taught me to prepare healthy meals on my own, and really prepared me for life outside of school. I felt more prepared after four months in the BOOST program than I did after the three years I spent in traditional high school. In joining BOOST, I not only got help attaining my GED, but i had a support group of people ready and willing to do everything in their power to help me in any way they could. BOOST is a very rewarding program with alot of upside and zero downside.

Education Pays

When unemployment is a problem we see more people coming to the B.O.C.E.S. looking to increase their education. Some come to complete their High School Equivalency; some come to enroll in classes through Western Wyoming Community College or one of our four year Universities. As soon as jobs become available again, attendance drops.

While it makes sense on one hand, it doesn’t on another.
There is one certainty that the Department of Education and the Department of
Labor both support: “Education Pays”.

The Department of Labor confirms in recent employment projections what all educators already knew: Education Pays.  Our country values hard work, but rewards
skill and education.

In 2011 the median unemployment rate was 8.2% of the population and the median income was $782.00 per week.

For people without a high school diploma or equivalency, unemployment rates were 14.9% and the median weekly income was $444.00.  With a high school diploma or equivalency unemployment dropped slightly to 10.3% with the median income at $626.00.

It is only when the educational level reaches an Associates Degree that the unemployment rate drops below the mean to 7%, and the income comes close to the mean at $767.00 per week.

Even more startling are the statistics on job advancement that show that someone without additional education will only increase wages $2 an hour in the next ten years of their working life. In the following 15 years:
they will increase only $0.25 cents more.

Whether you are working or not, additional education will almost always mean more job and financial security.

It is never too late to increase your education.

The Uinta B.O.C.E.S. #1 Education Center offers High School Equivalency, Certificate and Degree classes that will fit most any schedule. Contact the B.O.C.E.S. today for more information on how you can make Education Pay.
